FR23 MC Visit to Cap Blanc Nez
30 mai 2023The Cap Blanc Nez is situated at Escalles, a small village in a nice valley 10 km south of Calais and 23 km north of Boulogne sur Mer. The students went on a walk along the cliffs, which are mainly made of Mesozoic rocks, i.e. mainly limestone. It is the northernmost cliff in France. Students could see many kinds of rare plants growing in the places where the cliff has collapsed and a lot of birds nest in the steep faces on the cliffs. The location is part of the European Natura 2000 network. So they could understand the necessity to protect these plants and animals. The highest point of the cliffs is located at a height of 151 m above sea level and it is possible to see the shores of England from there. Of course, in case of good weather. It was cloudy on the day of our visit. In this place there is a Memorial dedicated to the Dover Patrol, it is in honor of the French and British soldiers who died during the 1st World War.
The walk was very informativ for the students because they could verify their theoretical knowledge of geography, geology and biology. They realized the importance of this place in terms of history.
