30 mai 2023Visiting the Port museum was a very good opportunity to learn about the history of the city of Dunkerque and the life of people in the past. The guide explained how the canals were built, the fortifications of the city and all the changes to the port that took place in the past. The students could look at the portrait of the corsair Jean Bart, who played an important role in the history of the city. They saw that he was overweight, which in those days was a sign that he was rich and could spend a lot of money on food. In the next part of the exposition, the students heard about the life of fishermen, about their families and customs, about workers in docks and port. The evolution on work from manual, to use of modern machines, hydraulic systems to load the goods on boats. Next topic were the boat light houses. Of course students could take pictures and to ask the questions. The guide talked about traditional carnival in Dunkerque which is held annualy.
