SPB25 CAE Maricel museum guided tour

This visit immerses students in the artistic and cultural heritage of Sitges, discovering how the town has inspired numerous Catalan artists and shaped the region’s modernist identity. Students take part in a guided visit to the Maricel Museum, one of Sitges’ most emblematic cultural landmarks. This historic building, known as Maricel de Mar, was originally a group of fishermen’s houses before being transformed in the early 20th century by the American collector Charles Deering. Its white façades, blue details, and elegant arches facing the sea create a peaceful and inspiring atmosphere.

During the tour, students explore the different rooms of the Maricel complex. Inside, they admire richly decorated halls featuring carved wooden ceilings, colorful ceramic tiles, and balconies overlooking the Mediterranean. The Sala del Vigatà and the Sala d’Or impress them with their ornate designs, mosaics, and the harmonious blend of medieval and modernist styles. These interiors show how architecture, decoration, and art can work together to create a unique cultural space.

Throughout the visit, they learn about the importance of Sitges for renowned artists such as Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas, and Josep Llimona, and how the town became a vibrant hub for creativity and modernist expression. Participants admire artworks from different centuries, including sculptures, paintings, and decorative arts that illustrate the evolution of Catalan culture. They also enjoy the magnificent views over the Mediterranean Sea from the patios, terraces, which help them understand why Sitges has inspired so many creators. Special attention is given to the modernist tile patterns displayed in the museum — designs they later reproduced during a practical art workshop, linking the visit to hands-on artistic learning.
