In this creative workshop, students explore the artistic techniques of Catalan Modernism by designing and decorating their own ceramic tiles, inspired by the geometric and natural motifs that characterized the early 20th century. Held at the Maricel Museum, this hands-on session invites students to become modernist artists for a day and to apply what they observed during the guided visit. Before starting, the instructor briefly explains the main principles of Modernist decoration, such as the use of curved lines, floral elements, and balanced compositions.

Using traditional decorative techniques, students paint and design pottery tiles inspired by geometric shapes and natural patterns, following the style of the modernist masters. They learn how to plan their design, choose harmonious colours, and apply paint carefully to obtain clear and symmetrical shapes. Throughout the activity, they are encouraged to experiment, make artistic decisions, and express their own interpretation of Modernism.

Through their choice of colours, motifs, and symmetry, each participant creates a unique and personal tile, combining artistic freedom with cultural heritage. The workshop also helps students develop fine motor skills and visual-spatial awareness as they work with precision on small surfaces. The activity connects directly with the museum visit, where students previously studied examples of modernist design, allowing them to transform observation into creation. By the end of the session, students not only produce a decorative object to take home, but also gain a deeper understanding of the artistic language that shaped Catalan culture.

Students produce their own modernist-inspired tile as a tangible memory of their Erasmus+ experience. They strengthen their appreciation for Catalan art, improve fine motor and design skills, and gain confidence in artistic self-expression. The workshop fosters creativity, cultural understanding, and pride in shared European artistic heritage.
