FR24 Science workshop 1 about water
04 mai 2024The students actively partook in a science and experimental workshop about water. The workshop presented the importance and protection of water, greenhouse effect, climate change and environmental awareness. Students listened to the teacher Florence explaining the experiment they were going to do, using pictures to understand better By asking questions to the students Florence tried to actívate students’ prior knowledge on the topic of water and make them to participate actively naming human activities thatincrease the greenhouse effect and actions to prevent sea level increase.
The experiment protocol was the following:
1) Put 12 ice cubes into the water of the “North Pole” container and then write the exact water level on the container.
2) Put the continent into the second container, the “South Pole” or Antarctic continent.
3) Put 12 ice cubes on the continent, but the ice cubes must not fall into the water; you must only put them on the surface of thecontinent.
4) Write the exact water level on the second container.
5) Now, wait until the ice cubes have melted completely with the help of hair dryer.
6) When the ice cubes have completely melted, write the exact water levels on the two containers
A video was shown about North Pole’s melting helping the students to see and better understand the information of the presentation. Florence explained and pointed out the important points.
By taking part in the experimental workshop, students cooperate and have fun while learning more about the importance of workingactively for our planet conservation.
The students learned doing an experiment that when ice melts it doesn’t have the same effect in the Arctic as in the Antarctica
During the presentation the teacher asked questions to the group, in order to involve the students in the discussion and provide a framework for learners to understand new information, and gives instructor formative assement information to adapt instruction.Important issues such as climate change, recycling, importance of water and need of actions were raised.
Finally a conclusion was drawn: By 2100 sea level will rise in Dunkerque, Málaga and the Adriatic coast. We need an action to prevent sea level increase for new generations.
