This cultural visit invites students to explore Barcelona’s modernist heritage and its deep connection to Gaudí, combining architecture, urban planning, and cultural discovery. Students embark on a walking tour from Passeig de Gràcia to the Sagrada Família, passing through some of the most emblematic neighbourhoods of the Eixample district. Along the way, they observe iconic modernist buildings such as Casa Batlló, Casa Amatller, and Casa de les Punxes, discovering how these works helped shape the city’s unique architectural identity.

As they walk through the elegant streets of Passeig de Gràcia and continue toward Plaça Catalunya, students learn about IldefonsCerdà’s urban plan, famous for its grid layout and wide, ventilated avenues designed to improve social living conditions in the 19th century. They also explore the lively atmosphere of this central square, where the old city meets the modern expansion of Barcelona. Moving further into the Eixample, students notice the characteristic chamfered corners, uniform building heights, and the presence of modernist details on many façades, reflecting the creativity and ambition of the period.

The visit continues with a walk through residential streets that highlight the daily life of Barcelona’s inhabitants, showing a mix of shops, cafés, and local markets that give the district its vibrant character. As the group approaches the Sagrada Família, they reflect on Gaudí’s vision of harmonizing nature, spirituality, and architecture, and how this monumental basilica has become a symbol of the city. Throughout the journey, students also consider the importance of the Mediterranean in shaping Barcelona’s culture, economy, and identity, influencing everything from architectural colours to the city’s open and dynamic spirit.

Students gain a deeper understanding of Barcelona’s artistic and architectural evolution and how urban planning shapes daily life. They develop awareness of the city’s historical connection to Gaudi, fostering appreciation for cultural heritage and sustainable urban living. The visit promotes curiosity, teamwork, and intercultural learning — reflecting the Erasmus+ values of exploration, culture, and cooperation.
