SPB25 MSTE La Pedrera Guided Visit

This cultural visit allows students to explore La Pedrera (Casa Milà), one of Antoni Gaudí’s most emblematic and innovative masterpieces, reflecting the creativity and modernity of early 20th-century Catalonia. During the activity, students take part in a guided tour in English of La Pedrera, a building that was both controversial and revolutionary when it was first constructed because of its unusual shapes and lack of straight lines. From the outside, they observe the wavy stone façade, the sculpted balconies in wrought iron, and the large windows that let natural light enter the apartments. The guide explains how Gaudí designed the building as a living organism, where every element—from the staircase to the courtyard—is connected and serves a purpose. The visit includes the exploration of key spaces within the building—such as the roof terrace, the attic, and the noble floor—which helps students understand how art, structure, and function blend harmoniously in modernist design. On the roof terrace, they walk among the famous chimneys and ventilation towers that look like surreal sculptures or stone warriors. The roof is not flat but made of different levels, ramps, and curves, creating the impression of walking on a small, undulating landscape above the city. From there, students enjoy an impressive panoramic view of Barcelona while the guide shows them how Gaudí used geometry, such as curves and hyperbolic shapes, to combine beauty with practical solutions for air circulation and temperature control. In the attic, they see the parabolic arches that support the roof and learn how these structures distribute weight efficiently. On the noble floor, they discover the interior decoration, including mosaics, doors, and ceilings, and understand how every detail contributes to the overall harmony of the building. Altogether, the visit offers students a rich and concrete experience of Gaudí’s architectural genius, linking culture, history, and geometry.
